Here is basic safety advise for a grill fire:

When you are grilling make sure there is always a fire extinguisher near-by along with safety goggles and heavy gloves. These are necessary to put out a fire on your grill.  Also have your local fire department information.  Should a grill fire happen, immediately use the extinguisher, gloves, and goggles to put the fire out. If you are using a gas grill turn the gas off completely. Have a person near-by call the fire department or 911 if you can not control the fire.

Attention our Philadelphia Friends & Family: Avoid a Holiday Fire Disaster! 

Did you know that Christmas trees alone result in 13 million dollars, annually, in property damage? More importantly, these fires present real risk towards family, friends, and homes! While having a live tree in your home is a tradition to many & beautiful, beware of dangers and take simple precautions; The combination of tree dryness, electrical malfunction with lights and poorly located heating sources can make for a devastating combination.

BUT IF YOUR HOLIDAY IS JUST NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT A LIVE TREE, FOLLOW THESE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS TO KEEP THREATS AT BAY:

  • Fresh trees are less likely to catch fire, so look for a tree with vibrant green needles that are hard to pluck and don’t break easily from its branches. The tree shouldn’t be shedding its needles readily.
  • Always place your tree away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights, and keep the tree base filled with water to avoid a dry-out.
  • Make sure all your indoor and outdoor Christmas lights have been tested in a lab by the UL or ETL/ITSNA for safety, and throw out any damaged lights.
  • Any lights you use outdoors must be labeled suitable for exterior placement, and be sure to plug them into a ground-fault circuit interrupter protected receptacle.
  • Keep all your holiday candles away from your Christmas tree, surrounding furniture and décor.
  • Bedtime means lights off! ­ Don’t forget to turn your Christmas tree lights of each night.

Tips on the FIRE Do's & Don'ts

What to do: Immediately contact 911, Your Insurance Carrier and your local SERVPRO Professional

  1. Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  2. Blow or brush vacuum loose soot particles from upholstery, drapes and carpets.
  3. Place old towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  4. Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  5. If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.

What NOT to do:

  1. Send garments to ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor. Your local SERVPRO Professional can assist you with professional dry-cleaners to treat the odor.
  2. Attempt to clean any electrical appliances, TV sets, radios, etc. that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service. Your local SERVPRO can assist you with this as well.
