What to do with refrigerated items during a power outage

4/25/2017 (Permalink)

Hello from our SERVPRO Spring Garden Family!

Spring & summer thunderstorms approaching. We thought you should know what to do with REFRIGERATED ITEMS should there be a power outage. Here are some tips compliments from American Red Cross on Food Safety:

http://www.redcross.org/get-help/prepare-for-emergencies/types-of-emergencies/food-safety

1.) Call electric company, advise and in inquire about how long the outage may be.
2.) Keep fridge and freezer doors closed as much as you can.
3.) Food that is over 40°F for longer than 2 hours should be disposed of. Also food that if discolored or has an odor.
4.) Eat perishable foods first: fridge first, then freezer.
5.) Have a cooler and ice prepared if the outrage may be more than 24 hours. Keep it in cool place covered in a blanket or towel.

SERVPRO & THE AMERICAN RED CROSS are close affiliates as both companies enjoy helping those in need during a time of loss. We are proud to have such a great business relationship!
